Youtube video critique

 Low quality video

 High quality video

Photography videos on youtube, in particular ones dealing with the higher end cameras, are for the most part good quality, but there are some factors that differentiate the ok ones from the good ones. Most of the videographers have mastered framing and lighting but the defining difference is script. In the top video there is a lack of focus and detail on what is being talked about and no clear learning outcomes offered. The video's creator introduces functions that he doesn't use and the important information gets lost in the rambling. There is an introduction and vague learning outcome stated at the beginning but no real review of the information learned at the end. In the second video the focus is on a single technique or learning outcome with clear demonstrations of how it works and a detailed description of why it's beneficial. The demonstration and comparison to alternate methods provided a clear understanding of the shooting technique being used and why.
I like to use youtube as a quick reference in online resources for my classes. That way students can quickly reference key concepts or follow along with the technical steps involved in an assignment. The creation of subject lists would also be a good way to group reference videos related to the topics covered in each class and a handy way to review material deemed useful by the instructor if students don't have direct access to the teacher either because of online course delivery or not being in class. With mobile devices being so prevalent, students have the ability to reference video and refresh themselves on techniques while out in the field which is a great way to troubleshoot.

  1. True - lists are a great way to organize videos by subject which you can then share with your students or colleagues.
